Réception de mars 2017 à Strasbourg

“Remain united in promoting our common European values”

ERA marks 25th anniversary with Presidents of European Parliament and European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg

Pavel Svoboda MEP, Chairman of the European Parliament Legal Affairs Committee and of ERA’s Executive Board, hosted the reception in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 15 March 2017, which was attended by President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani, President of the European Court of Human Rights Guido Raimondi and other distinguished guests.

“The Academy of European Law is a child of the Parliament. As President of the European Parliament, I am now the father of ERA. Happy Birthday ERA!”, said Mr Tajani in his welcome speech. The President emphasised that the European Union is a community of law. “In a changing environment and in an increasingly diverse Union, the application and enforcement of Union law is key for our success. Therefore, the work of the Academy of European Law is more important than ever to foster and consolidate our Union of law for the benefit of our citizens.”

This was also underlined by Director Wolfgang Heusel, who thanked the European Parliament and its members for their continued support over the last 25 years. He introduced as guest speaker Guido Raimondi, President of the European Court of Human Rights, which has been a key partner of ERA in human rights training in the same period.

Mr Raimondi called for “a continued cooperation between the three institutions – the European Court of Human Rights, the European Parliament and the Academy of European Law (ERA) – to promote our common European values”. He acknowledged ERA’s role in teaching legal practitioners how to apply European law and praised in particular its readiness to make the law of the European Convention on Human Rights and the case law of the ECHR in Strasbourg a regular part of its programmes. “May they all three, along with all democratic Europeans, remain united in promoting our common European values and our common political heritage.”, said Mr Raimondi.

ERA’s 25th anniversary reception was attended by members of the European Parliament from varies countries and political groups, staff of the Parliament and the Court, representatives of the Strasbourg Bar, as well as lawyers and academics from the Strasbourg region.
